In the last several weeks students were busily finishing their animal research, fairy tales and their poetry. Animal research started right after spring vacation. Winter the dolphin had been studied in first grade after being brought to the attention of students and teachers by one of our first graders- Cecily. This led to the bottlenose dolphin being the animal that we all started with in our research studies. Students were read various books, articles and watched videos and listened to the sounds of the dolphin on the National Geographic site on the internet for children. We shared that researchers can use these various modalities to learn about their subject. Some students had first hand knowledge of their animals and we acknowledged that primary research was also a powerful way to learn. As students shared some of their background knowledge we checked together to confirm the facts with a book, article or by using one of the internet research site. Students learned the features of nonfiction books that help readers gain knowledge. It was impressive to see students using the table of contents, index and glossary as they conducted their individual research. Each student after our study of the bottlenose dolphin was able to choose the animals that they wanted to study. Students had an opportunity to share their research on a regular basis at the beginning of our lesson. Often other students would become interested in an animal after listening to one of their classmates share. Gwen our librarian, was vital to this project and she gathered a myriad of books about animals. She also led a lesson in alphabetical order in the library. This was useful not only for selecting books but connected to our format for our published book. The information was published an an alphabet book format. Students wrote their final draft, illustrated their information and created a table of contents and cover for their books. After brainstorming possible titles for their book, each student chose one that felt just right.<br />For our author's celebration, each student shared one page from their research book and one page from their poetry book Students have been writing poetry all year. Catalina inspired the students with her teaching of an acrostic animal poem. First she wrote a group poem in each first grade class. Then each student picked an animal and using the acrostic format started with the animal's name in Spanish. The poems turned out beautifully. <br />Students practiced reading their selections and doing final editing during the week of the celebration. The day before was our dress rehearsal and all students became comfortable with the format for the morning. Friday morning May 27, we began our celebration with a circle with students and teachers in each class, holding hands and sharing a squeeze. The sharing of research and poetry went beautifully for students and their families. After the formal sharing, students and families ate snacks that related to books read in first grade this year such as Blueberries for Sal. Students had the opportunity to read all of their published books to their families while they shared in a snack. A wonderful celebration of reading, and all aspects of writing was had by all.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-24767388382581589472011-05-17T07:43:00.000-07:002011-05-31T07:31:12.073-07:00Third Grade Study of Immigration and Ellis Island<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlZEITWUhaM4cR-tCyEEn1xEKEBP6kgrX94XcWKjvRYQe4zCmmPpd556gOoMCpwMb9gLzEmTellevPZSpcc6U3tSwKZs0EvzEUYUNWTPe88wLfj0YAkHYCkKoDxFKDesvxbWspEr2IQtfO/s1600/IMG_1234.JPG"><img style="float:left; I had the opportunity to become involved in two different ways. Students had the opportunity to examine artifacts from Ellis Island and then to choose in small groups a particular artifact to study. It was exciting to see the scrutiny and conversation occurring as students tried to determine the purpose of a particular artifact. Researching different internet sites helped illuminate some artifacts. An example is when a document had a language other than English. The group thought the language might be Russian. Utilizing a translation program helped to confirm their theory.<br />The book <span style="font-style:italic;">At Ellis Island A History in Many Voices </span>was read in small groups. Discussion was vibrant as students read about the experiences of children traveling to Ellis Island and their observations of their stay there. Some of the students wrote their own guide to Ellis Island to serve as a resource for children who were going through that experience there.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-29006042134719012812011-04-10T17:38:00.000-07:002011-04-10T18:13:48.440-07:00Philadelphia Book FestivalThis year the Philadelphia Book Festival will feature a day long celebration of children's and young adult literature on Saturday April 16th at The Free Library. http://libwww.freelibrary.org/bookfestival/ This link has all of the information about the week long festival and the details about Saturday's events. <br /><br />The following is a list from The Free Library web site, of just a few of the events happening during the morning of April 16. I spent a wonderful Monday on March 14, 2011, visiting this school and observing classes. The school was originally a Levi Strauss factory and has been transformed into a beautiful space for learning. The staff and students are committed to supporting the Mission neighborhood through community service and learning projects. <div>There were many connections in the philosophy of learning between our two schools. A strong emphasis on literacy and employing strategies as one reads and writes. I observed students making connections, looking for the big idea, exploring the elements of story structure and questioning. Poetry was being read and written in many of the classrooms. Artistic, musical and dramatic expression is often connected to literacy. Students in the Lower School are helped with their print and cursive skills using the same method that we use- Handwriting Without Tears and the spelling program is also the same- The Sitton Spelling and Word Skills program. Fourth grade students cement their knowledge of cursive by publishing all of their writing using cursive. This is an idea that will be interesting to explore at our school- thinking about when publication of student writing using cursive is most effective. The Quaker testament of Simplicity is discussed and written about in all of the classrooms. I had the opportunity to read student journals that reflected an individual interpretation of how Simplicity can affect their lives.</div><div>Last year some of the teachers and administrators from San Francisco Friends visited Abington Friends and observed in our classrooms. I was able to see some of our philosophy reflected in their school. I am looking forward to sharing my reflections with teachers here and continuing this tradition of sharing great ideas that make us all more thoughtful and effective teachers. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="https://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="288" height="192" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=https%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Fannbb8%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26access%3Dpublic%26psc%3DF%26q%26uname%3Dannbb8" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-72620328702468281102011-03-04T05:46:00.001-08:002011-03-04T07:07:27.202-08:00Author David Schwartz's Visit Culminates Math Day<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAVBr6I1QuhsdnkSjJF1njGcPwcn8bT9yxX3V-PqkZYETMZXX4idsfbdhVciW8bN5GlfX37UmsYiDx8bQumF8oD1MRkxlv9yfKsrX_GVnxCfbTkTuYkO4LyfOQlRFHUkyhIsq-GEL0prs/s1600/IMG_0879.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAVBr6I1QuhsdnkSjJF1njGcPwcn8bT9yxX3V-PqkZYETMZXX4idsfbdhVciW8bN5GlfX37UmsYiDx8bQumF8oD1MRkxlv9yfKsrX_GVnxCfbTkTuYkO4LyfOQlRFHUkyhIsq-GEL0prs/s320/IMG_0879.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580220953395484578" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTiFX6SV0B-_tuzuOx6dhP08SNiqjfa5ue5JIMgpA6fE5Plen5WvLbOYmfo_nVaZq9JASp2snRYi3b0EO0YIiSBu-1KPvZwG2Qk2rXKYBEFU-pgFLAKy-ROWQ3M3ZMrXmGVcDkUxviij0U/s1600/IMG_0877.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTiFX6SV0B-_tuzuOx6dhP08SNiqjfa5ue5JIMgpA6fE5Plen5WvLbOYmfo_nVaZq9JASp2snRYi3b0EO0YIiSBu-1KPvZwG2Qk2rXKYBEFU-pgFLAKy-ROWQ3M3ZMrXmGVcDkUxviij0U/s320/IMG_0877.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580220950837712370" /></a><i>How Much is a Million? </i>is David's Schwartz first published book for children. Since its publication in 1985, this book has delighted and intrigued all of its young readers. <div>David Schwartz shared his experiences as a child with students during his visit. In first, second and third grade he stumped his teachers with his" why" questions such as, "How many grains of sand are there in a handful of sand?" </div><div>I'm sure that David's teachers found it no surprise when his passion for inquiry and discovery combined with a love for reading and math created his career trajectory as a children's book author.</div><div>Teachers and Gwen our librarian, have been reading David's books to students in preparation for Math Day and David Schwartz's visit. Many of our students have also been reading his books at home. It was wonderful to listen and watch our students' participation in the sharing of his books. Their thinking about mathematical issues in nature and the world around us is impressive. Even our prekindergarten students were enthusiastic participants. </div><div>David Schwartz's love of reading and writing shone throughout his presentation. With this intriguing first sentence from the book <i>The Skirt</i>, third graders are pulled into the story and Miata's problem. She has left her folklorico skirt on the bus after she and her best friend Ana have moved from seat to seat in order to escape a few of the boys who are being a nuisance. Miata has been rehearsing the folklorico with her dance troupe for months and will be performing it on Sunday. As she left it on the bus on Friday she is very worried about how to get this skirt that has a lot of meaning for her mother back. Her mother wore this skirt as a girl in Mexico and is looking forward to seeing Miata perform in it. <div>Students have made connections to Miata and her tendency to forget and lose things. They also have made connections to her family life and the way her parents and younger brother celebrate the end of the work week, the way she cooks with her mother and watches out for her younger brother. We have also discussed how Miata's friend Rodolfo can at times bother her and other times be a great friend. Many students have shared similar experiences with friends and siblings. There are many opportunities to make predictions as to how Miata will solve her problem. Students are mixed as to whether an adult will find out that Miata has lost her special skirt and help her or whether Miata and her friends will solve the problem.</div><div>Everyone reading this book is looking forward to our next session of reading. </div>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-62888478109862342662011-02-04T05:40:00.000-08:002011-02-04T06:21:47.143-08:00Amelia Earhart Pioneer of the Sky<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6F6RHhtpl_qNMD2tsWtOEwkbNNQLpvV2_uepx-Ia5hudHSiGui2gtf9TUZk2pRHu-6NMZ5kjXBUVvJzcojq-nKfg8PPoJhdMbavj4a49IVQ2egZlzSIbxH8Ya399qj4tb2AWhGXLti9Xi/s1600/IMG_0831.jpg"><img style="float:left; Even as a child, Amelia was daring and adventurous. She built a wooden roller coaster with her sister Muriel, and while Amelia loved going down this slightly rickety structure her sister was scared. Students talked about when they feel adventurous and daring in their lives and when they are more cautious. Amelia is remembered for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and other daring feats flying. Along with this passion of hers, she also showed compassion to others. She worked as a nurses aide in Canada helping wounded soldiers during World War 1. She thought she might want to be a doctor and enrolled in Columbia University. She realized while in college that she needed to follow her dream of flying. Daniel, Noah V, Michelle, Sarah, Ava, Charlotte, Sophie, Ella, Alani and Noah P. have been eager contributors to discussion, making connections, posting queries, and writing. I think that they would all agree that the contributions that Amelia Earhart made to the world during her time continue to inspire all today.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-51554111329483264002011-01-26T05:35:00.000-08:002011-01-26T05:53:22.076-08:00Rumpopo's Porch<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjUXMpYoUZNXTLCYRgYeRF43jqB8VjS9FEk5jWrH99IHK5GcnyY7w-K1PR2_f_Rx6FoPN-wgWL5mn6P9Esr4RpuL5ByFJS_GkdCuHl6n2cSG9ZUU2Xmb-rZ3dhbYiyeGS8dNtuC0IhVdCI/s1600/IMG_0802.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjUXMpYoUZNXTLCYRgYeRF43jqB8VjS9FEk5jWrH99IHK5GcnyY7w-K1PR2_f_Rx6FoPN-wgWL5mn6P9Esr4RpuL5ByFJS_GkdCuHl6n2cSG9ZUU2Xmb-rZ3dhbYiyeGS8dNtuC0IhVdCI/s320/IMG_0802.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566489525010459058" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXKvKh9KmG87t5PcTvccSfbTyzRnQy3I_q444mnEX9cIPxS84xvnFp_R8k3Qb32LGiZ7p-8S3GyedSOyTO05GLwaYW8Qx-OAKWGSaas7VzRhnJaF6SAcH-4Gt5jmLAc2mMHy7CDxjYVQx_/s1600/IMG_0800.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXKvKh9KmG87t5PcTvccSfbTyzRnQy3I_q444mnEX9cIPxS84xvnFp_R8k3Qb32LGiZ7p-8S3GyedSOyTO05GLwaYW8Qx-OAKWGSaas7VzRhnJaF6SAcH-4Gt5jmLAc2mMHy7CDxjYVQx_/s320/IMG_0800.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566489202544182402" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibRU0OuOuNpbM9e_5wy5gRNWwzkmqIifceY95ZKKEvE-7R5B74HH5jjnPWUFuChkdgPn5c0lNZXeDrNt06jLW3Bh9-xTNqHcK2kF5HlVJfDkFC9nttiEKYxbTLlzSnXa9okeTIKUlKkgLN/s1600/IMG_0799.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibRU0OuOuNpbM9e_5wy5gRNWwzkmqIifceY95ZKKEvE-7R5B74HH5jjnPWUFuChkdgPn5c0lNZXeDrNt06jLW3Bh9-xTNqHcK2kF5HlVJfDkFC9nttiEKYxbTLlzSnXa9okeTIKUlKkgLN/s320/IMG_0799.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566488712936072450" /></a><br />Kenan, Jubi, Jeanne, Josh and Danielle were avid readers and contributors to our book group selection <i>Replay </i>by Sharon Creech. Leo, the main character, is a boy who dreams of acting and dancing on Broadway. His big family of very verbal siblings discount his quest and see him as a dreamer. This funny and often poignant story allows each member of the family to learn to appreciate dreams that are apparent and are also hidden. <div>Sharon Creech included a play <i>Rompopo's Porch</i> by Bill Beeber for readers. She writes, "If you want to read or perform the play..."</div><div>This invitation was taken up eagerly by the members of this bookgroup. Rehearsal time occurred not only during scheduled book group times but also during recess. All of our cast members played two if not three roles and identified a particular role by either a change in voice or by using a costume addition such as a shawl. </div><div>Fifth grade audience members and teachers appreciated this performance and laughed at all the right moments. Each scriptwriter also cast, directed and introduced their scene. The plays were performed as reader's theater with script in hand for the fifth grade. <div>Carlie, Thomas J and Harvey are three children who have found themselves in foster care living with a kind woman named Mrs. Mason. Carlie, has lived in a few different foster homes and is cynical about this new home. Mrs. Mason knows in her heart that Carlie is a strong young woman who can help the two younger boys. Carlie's reply to Mrs. Mason spoke to our hearts and had us hoping that Carlie would find a different experience in this new foster home. "No, you listen. Harvey and me and Thomas J are just like pinballs. Somebody put in a dime and punched a button and out we came, ready or not, and settled in the same groove. That's all." She looked at Mrs. Mason. "Now you don't see pinballs helping each other, do you?" </div><div>The scenes written by our fifth grade writers focus in on pivotal moments in this story when the characters realized the strength they have whether it is the ability to show kindness and tenderness or grit in facing their challenges and forging strong connections and bonds with each other. Our audience of fifth grader students were moved by the portrayals of this story. </div>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-29920733972666304522011-01-03T13:18:00.000-08:002011-01-06T06:31:24.882-08:00Delving Deep-Second Grade Reads Biographies<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8EUHqBX95ZPdiq724fMJLh82I6AkK9cRPCt0hVTfgY5L9qoXSsE3HnvKPLaIhTAY7T-dDb969fDu4kbPRiEPZTuMBdpSzKrMsYXPbGeklnq6KFa22D3h5kf5GCK8ILfPzZ5QMLgMQQoe7/s1600/IMG_0780.JPG"><img style="float:left; Their task was to pick a book and preview the book looking for the features of the book that helped to convey information and to try and determine what kind of books were gathered. They each picked an interesting feature or aspect of their book and then met with a partner to share. Returning to the circle and sharing their findings led to an understanding that all of these books were biographies. Many of the books had features such as time lines, pictures with captions and a glossary that helped convey information to the reader. It was noted by many that most of the biographies started with a person's childhood and then later told about the contributions of that person to their community, field of study or the world. Benjamin Franklin by Victoria Sherrow will be read aloud to the children. This book was previewed today and the children shared background knowledge that they thought they knew about Benjamin Franklin. One child knew that he did something with a kite and a key, another child thought that he had traveled to other countries. We confirmed that we would be reading about both of these events and then clarified a few misconceptions such as although he contributed greatly to the government he was not a president. This book was chosen as the first book to be read to the children because Benjamin Franklin contributed in so many ways to the community, as an inventor, a statesman, and as a great communicator. In book groups we will start off reading three different books about Helen Keller. We will be exploring not only the ways Helen contributed to the world and became a crusader for the blind and the deaf but the aspects of her personality that enabled her to do achieve her goals and help not only herself but many others in the area of communication. Throughout this unit of study, students will be selecting biographies to read and write about. Many of the books shared today in circle and with partners have already been eagerly selected for individual reading. Delving deep into this study of biographies, is a powerful way to return from winter break.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-91912559155972261892010-12-13T06:40:00.000-08:002010-12-13T06:54:05.823-08:00The Terracotta Girl<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Tko6-C9uAIYWfPyUqZbXlgIOPpcrFWuqfaRPZh9pkSpGYIAQEBDDwUDRUxaQ6Yiqde26epE5u2t2E_nv3ddHKzWU8QEqi8jj4CcXrsxcstDNJzmPRbr7zYTpboDc6D1R9RJ1ecSXHhb6/s1600/IMG_0569.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Tko6-C9uAIYWfPyUqZbXlgIOPpcrFWuqfaRPZh9pkSpGYIAQEBDDwUDRUxaQ6Yiqde26epE5u2t2E_nv3ddHKzWU8QEqi8jj4CcXrsxcstDNJzmPRbr7zYTpboDc6D1R9RJ1ecSXHhb6/s320/IMG_0569.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550180050968356498" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoMFiwVXCWfjgCI3KHUrhimEE028XMkkyeto7rvQgTPDdK6RPXcCNek4rTBuxO_OqJB59k-wRsC3uZj425ZuDxGdswOo6eUimQp3w8nShrmbKfZLNzH5lCtPH-vWmWmprC0q6I8Ykl1ScW/s1600/IMG_0567.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoMFiwVXCWfjgCI3KHUrhimEE028XMkkyeto7rvQgTPDdK6RPXcCNek4rTBuxO_OqJB59k-wRsC3uZj425ZuDxGdswOo6eUimQp3w8nShrmbKfZLNzH5lCtPH-vWmWmprC0q6I8Ykl1ScW/s320/IMG_0567.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550179945154289522" /></a><br />Michael, Dexter, Laura, Cathy and Jared were avid readers and enthusiastic participants in discussion as we finished reading <i>The Terracotta Girl A Story of Ancient China</i>. Yung Lu is a young girl, living in the time of the Qin dynasty, who is determined to become a warrior in Chang'an when her father dies from mercury poisoning. She is brave and fearless as she journeys alone to reach her goal. When she encounters Qin Shi Huangdi, First Emperor of China, she tries to convince him not the take the mercury pills that he thinks will extend his life. Our book group members correctly predicted Qin Shi Huangdi's reaction to Yung Lu. <div>Ran Jie-shu is the artist creating the terracotta warriors who had summoned Yung Lu's father to join his project, and when Yung Lu finds him and asks if she can take her father's place as a warrior, she finds that Ran Jie-shu had a different kind of warrior in mind. </div><div>Third grade has spent the Fall studying Ancient China. Discussions are animated as they make text to self connections. Ruby starts a new school and has the reputation of her three popular older brothers to live up to. She is scared but puts on a brave front. Halfway through the book, she needs to make a decision as she learns that one of her brothers Roosevelt has made a bad choice in school, he has drawn on posters hanging up around the school, and rather than face the consequences he wants Ruby to help him. Ruby is resourceful, and caring and does think of a way to be of help in a positive manner. Friendship issues are ones that Ruby encounters and one that all of the students in our book group can share connections from their own lives and offer strategies to help Ruby.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-48968914507540075692010-12-10T06:58:00.000-08:002010-12-10T11:58:06.776-08:00Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCJozsOXTAetEmCnvB0DRgMnPQoPI_AYR5RHcFoJaPBzxnG5b_S1rRqwr9x9SGwK8FvDZmJszML5Qao89SuHoip9mh7HY-4t3uKs91AghKUwlPo1rqH4HEfCIg8RDmG_t8jfFW4x7LPjW/s1600/IMG_0559.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCJozsOXTAetEmCnvB0DRgMnPQoPI_AYR5RHcFoJaPBzxnG5b_S1rRqwr9x9SGwK8FvDZmJszML5Qao89SuHoip9mh7HY-4t3uKs91AghKUwlPo1rqH4HEfCIg8RDmG_t8jfFW4x7LPjW/s320/IMG_0559.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549084543714767858" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF5jEf9fYLAIbEdHx0z6biJDizbECcBBX8a_KsE1Zpgd1U7-6rKLc-Cr0n12hs8ZNvMPYJcUwUXWz1Y-DgcebQd91eDVO8c8mCoQw6CpPjLsZu3IKGAQTCwrhGabTIeHbO7J34dfTDfmap/s1600/IMG_0557.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF5jEf9fYLAIbEdHx0z6biJDizbECcBBX8a_KsE1Zpgd1U7-6rKLc-Cr0n12hs8ZNvMPYJcUwUXWz1Y-DgcebQd91eDVO8c8mCoQw6CpPjLsZu3IKGAQTCwrhGabTIeHbO7J34dfTDfmap/s320/IMG_0557.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549084538048824770" /></a><br />Abbie is faced with quite a challenge in <i>Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie. </i>Book talk from Drew, Persey, Ava, Callie, Ari and Sarah has been lively as they envision the challenges Abbie faced when she was left with the responsibility to ensure that the lights kept burning in the lighthouse on Mattinicus Rock. On January 19, 1856, Abbie's father left the island and asked Abbie to care for her sisters and ailing mother while he went to gather oil, food and medicine. for her sick mother. A storm prevented him from returning that night and in fact it took four weeks for him to return. Students wrote in journal entries as if they were Abbie.<div> Ari wrote, " I am very nervous about the lighthouse. I miss Papa. I will do whatever it takes."</div><div> A selection from Sarah's journal entry is the following, " I really miss my Papa. He went away to get medicine for Mama, oil and corn. He was not supposed to be gone for long."</div><div> Drew included in his journal, " I wish I had help. It was easy to keep the lights burning. I want Papa back. If I didn't keep the lights burning, I wonder what it would be like for Mama and my sisters."</div><div>Callie included her responsibility of also taking care of the chickens. " I am worried about my chickens..."</div><div>A selection from Persey includes, "Papa has been away and I am sick of eating eggs and our house is wet and my chickens almost got washed away."</div><div>Ava wrote, "What has been hard for me is, father is away. I miss him so much. I can't wait until he gets back home. I kept the lights lit. It was really hard to do this job, but I did it anyway."</div><div>Everyone agreed that Abbie revealed courage, bravery, and a caring and helpful personality as she took care of her family, the chickens and the lights in the lighthouse during a raging storm while her father was away. </div><div><br /></div>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-86626168740122828422010-11-29T17:54:00.000-08:002010-12-06T06:58:52.023-08:00Literacy in Prekindergarten and Kindergarten<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT0hC4uYmrS1oEP0DOpJJ0wTeyTSbeHAwaFYtdBcpmxrEbsDvhocn0z_h53PqsXey3ScYvRIx_qbI2OCydoAd18dh-iuTixuHMTdXAtt1_VOGcmtJ1nHPS2hI1tyC52D-kKQSpIwCq2v1a/s1600/IMG_0549.JPG"><img style="float:left; Students brainstorm ideas and view them in a written web or chart. They write about literature, math, science and their lives. Illustrations are an important part of this composing process. Stories are read aloud by teachers, classmates, older students, parents and in Spanish by Catalina. As children engage in these rich literacy activities, they broaden their vocabulary, develop early literacy skills, and lay the foundation for a passion for reading and writing in all areas of their lives.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmlB1kJ5DrKwDiJRJpX9mZnoOI_k_taUG9-ksAvETODlp7quchWBsTlIKQpuIYhB0QUpvnUbYFt-IezJogqPOjb_26CELNdY85A0r0X78a0TcMD2UqzitSHfgWW5GgqgeWe0_Csrxp7w2U/s1600/Class+Brainstorm+on+new+Book+Study.JPG"><img style="float:left; Brave, confident, persistent and optimistic are a few of the character traits students are discovering Charlotte displayed, allowing her to carve out a life much different than the one she found herself living in, raised in a boy's orphanage in the mid-1800's. We are excited to continue to uncover how Charlotte ended up becoming a legendary stagecoach driver and the first woman ever to vote.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGXz9TxW5HN1gwUtsccB2ggzq4gvkYuyYE6iuR0xd5JCWfuHxIM0TfRtL6eng76sBaP3l1sg9QeRiJsWs_sUIDo5tt8us7LsTDhSIIIx2NMMdXkrZ-JtwBe5bQCZA-CCEWDRzwbYPbLcdS/s1600/IMG_0531.JPG"><img style="float:left; He thought Mudge made everything safe. He thought Mudge would never go away. And when Mudge did go away, when Henry called and called but Mudge didn't come, Henry's heart hurt and he cried for an hour. But when he finished crying, Henry said, "Mudge loves me. He wouldn't leave. He must be lost." <div>I read this passage from <i>Henry and Mudge The First Book,</i> to each first grade class at the beginning of reading workshop today. Students have been avidly following Henry and Mudge, listening to a chapter read aloud and thinking about character and setting. In response to this section of the book, Leah said, "Henry cried hard because he was mad when he thought that Mudge would run away." Kayla added that Henry was sad and was missing Mudge. Jevon and Mason were both happy when Henry realized that Mudge would never run away and that he must have gotten lost. Gurbani shared that Henry is looking for Mudge through the same forest that Mudge got lost in. This focused discussion about character and setting at the beginning of reading workshop allows students to work as a group on this reading strategy and then go off to apply the strategy to their just right reading. Reading partners think about character and setting in their just right books that they read and discuss with teachers and then independently show their thinking about their reading in writing. </div><div><br /></div>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-9237967545294181302010-11-11T09:42:00.000-08:002010-11-12T13:08:04.490-08:00Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrgkd3CRq2hMWNp73dPGm7TY-Sn1AgSAuE_XpHgd7GXj-hI8UFXqjnlzPACjnqVxN2DSZY3b452fEASWR5rNGdgQesWpBAXkNdtLhj3Bsqxp20_tD5koha4pzeaTwW9j4CaZHhkzH8AojZ/s1600/IMG_0529.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrgkd3CRq2hMWNp73dPGm7TY-Sn1AgSAuE_XpHgd7GXj-hI8UFXqjnlzPACjnqVxN2DSZY3b452fEASWR5rNGdgQesWpBAXkNdtLhj3Bsqxp20_tD5koha4pzeaTwW9j4CaZHhkzH8AojZ/s320/IMG_0529.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538772475611439906" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlDt0xk3SACm9TWt8PdN6chearjowkEet5VHLRMymUvg4YPiXuuYX0gIFQvCAi2G9YkIAg0J6c9btAq3GpeNNA0a-j5oM6nkRauBQCwLBl9c0YFQbytSzqB1RAVXkvebevc04CpKMKBOsM/s1600/IMG_0527.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlDt0xk3SACm9TWt8PdN6chearjowkEet5VHLRMymUvg4YPiXuuYX0gIFQvCAi2G9YkIAg0J6c9btAq3GpeNNA0a-j5oM6nkRauBQCwLBl9c0YFQbytSzqB1RAVXkvebevc04CpKMKBOsM/s320/IMG_0527.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538772471782307938" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42fj8YVAYXSbYXcYHMP35O4-wBoLX__FDOTRQSe8uEvqIYAQka2GKbyi7egeINPue9rxq3zZ3nm3aJ80w4VBF9GwKpJCLmO3Y9uB7R59Gtv9_JaxBhetanwxq_ujS_xv1QwelbjDwWUPz/s1600/IMG_0477.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42fj8YVAYXSbYXcYHMP35O4-wBoLX__FDOTRQSe8uEvqIYAQka2GKbyi7egeINPue9rxq3zZ3nm3aJ80w4VBF9GwKpJCLmO3Y9uB7R59Gtv9_JaxBhetanwxq_ujS_xv1QwelbjDwWUPz/s320/IMG_0477.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538349415110411618" /></a><br /><div>Jason, Josiah, Daniel, Lydia and Aidan from Leslie's class and Colin, Miles, Krista and Margaret from Andrew's class were engrossed in reading and discussing their fourth grade book group selection, <i>Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World. </i> This book written by Mildred Pitts Walter won the Coretta Scott King Award. When we finished reading the book each student felt strongly that this book deserved the award based upon the strong writing, the family history that Justin learns about when he reads his Great-Grandpa Phillip Ward Sr.'s diary and the life lessons and self confidence Justin learns from his grandpa. </div><div>Justin reads about the challenging time his Great-Grandpa had when he was ten and his family decided to leave Tennessee in 1879 and settle in Missouri to live a better life as an owner of a ranch. Although slavery was officially over in Tennessee African Americans were not treated equally or remotely fairly. Justin's ancestors had to show courage and determination to seek a life of true freedom. Justin uses this knowledge of the courage they displayed to gain confidence in learning skills such as cooking, and working on the ranch during his summer with his grandpa. He returns to his mother and sisters with an independence that is admired by his family. All members of the book group were able to make text to self connections and recognize times they felt proud when they learned a new skill, or needed to resolve conflict with a sibling. They also made a lot of text to world connections and text to text connections to the time period Justin read about in his Great-Grandpa's diary. This was certainly a book that will be remembered for quite a long time by all.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPUviNm7lrQWxr9nAmUb-1e1HMcAqJIhibFQd2S-KQmD07k4jp3q_bURUrc8ZTFFR8UvOvv31o9KBEdJY0lDqmM06ESxGVMHyVFOgZHWUc8wgN1sLzzt8xWcPC81FugEYR5si_x7puTHVk/s1600/IMG_0475.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPUviNm7lrQWxr9nAmUb-1e1HMcAqJIhibFQd2S-KQmD07k4jp3q_bURUrc8ZTFFR8UvOvv31o9KBEdJY0lDqmM06ESxGVMHyVFOgZHWUc8wgN1sLzzt8xWcPC81FugEYR5si_x7puTHVk/s320/IMG_0475.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538349412435844514" /></a><br /><div><br /><div><br /></div></div></div>Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-5978508105922742252010-11-03T06:54:00.000-07:002010-11-11T09:04:42.886-08:00Ruby Holler<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBO19xZJcyHn6pKeeub6y7CjlShDBVLMMOZlsoZxioSLYjYxbxr-M7Rw42l0wEtMtxNLrIjh_Rd_1drezVxcsvayAoSCjztTvYh40-YtVV9dQJ-6FJk0lmJuXmjOnp1qudUlmZ-5kC8Mtg/s1600/IMG_0474.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBO19xZJcyHn6pKeeub6y7CjlShDBVLMMOZlsoZxioSLYjYxbxr-M7Rw42l0wEtMtxNLrIjh_Rd_1drezVxcsvayAoSCjztTvYh40-YtVV9dQJ-6FJk0lmJuXmjOnp1qudUlmZ-5kC8Mtg/s320/IMG_0474.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535321867735117730" /></a>Thoroughly engaged in reading about the lives of Dallas and Florida in Sharon Creech's book <i>Ruby Holler,</i> Kenan, Cameron, Taylor, Lauryn and Kaiya decided to read the last couple of chapters together rather than independently. Our book group discussions have been spirited as each member brought their reflections on character, text connections and envisionment to share during our group meetings. Although, these fifth graders did not grow up in an orphanage and experience living in foster homes, often being mistreated, there were still many opportunities to connect to the lives of Dallas and Florida. Kenan compared himself to Dallas, as they are both optimists and see the positive in situations. We had a great discussion as to whether we are more cautious like Florida or optimistic like Dallas. Reading the end together felt glorious<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW98Du_zcTZOV-tVTDx9hz28WJjYYMbu6rU1vt0nCA1akbI747nLJdsXkvJ7iFeGIGtSxCe1Fodys_Zj61q19sXdX2fXImWB037wIygMxLEYteOS_ekHZ04zz7gTw3EPxe3S0wc3VDB72s/s1600/IMG_0473.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW98Du_zcTZOV-tVTDx9hz28WJjYYMbu6rU1vt0nCA1akbI747nLJdsXkvJ7iFeGIGtSxCe1Fodys_Zj61q19sXdX2fXImWB037wIygMxLEYteOS_ekHZ04zz7gTw3EPxe3S0wc3VDB72s/s320/IMG_0473.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535321863556957154" /></a>as each reader savored the language and waited with anticipation to see how events resolved and to discover the decisions that characters would make.Ann Botel-Barnardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16183817672163800838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919355080414816659.post-1388045530334445042010-11-01T12:17:00.000-07:002010-11-03T06:14:01.755-07:00Bloomability<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvXmMfPoQdiAXIyoxlhFxpEa-dlrRZHTfNYjzqayfFcL8yEgxgDmpe_aH7YO1vOX_qem74snxJGq-RfnLnHu32cPMJzKJ9puJ2etjFhK18dTWs5NODvTQk4Bnhyphenhyphenr6zWbdnPb26xjlxVTWr/s1600/IMG_0468.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvXmMfPoQdiAXIyoxlhFxpEa-dlrRZHTfNYjzqayfFcL8yEgxgDmpe_aH7YO1vOX_qem74snxJGq-RfnLnHu32cPMJzKJ9puJ2etjFhK18dTWs5NODvTQk4Bnhyphenhyphenr6zWbdnPb26xjlxVTWr/s320/IMG_0468.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5534663943928650834" /></a>"Are you scared, Dinnie?" Second grade students feel as if they are there as they read about the moment Pablo, his father and their family ox discovered white smoke billowing from the ground in the field they were plowing. In the days leading up to this volcano erupting, Pablo's father has been feeling discontented with life in his village. He often says, "Nothing ever happens." <div>What advice can our student readers give to Pablo's father to help him to enjoy and appreciate his life? In order to think of ideas, we needed to understand what the community was like in 1943 in Pablo's village. Kacey noticed how the farm animals are valued and how children can take their pigs with them to their schoolhouse. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Gracen</span> and James noticed that the village had a market place where villagers can sell food and things they made. All agreed that they thought the market would be a great place to catch up with neighbors. Andrew, James, and Devon suggested that Pablo's dad could carve an animal for his son. Everyone was really excited when later in the story he gives Pablo a bull that he carved.</div><div>Second grade readers are transported in time through <i>Hill of Fire</i> author, Joan <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Sandin's</span> effective writing and illustrations. Chloe is my first grandchild. Her mom Rachel graduated from Abington Friends in 2000 and is now teaching in Austin. Both grandmothers are teachers. Her dad Jesse is an architect as are her two grandfathers. I'm sharing this background to help provide the context for the rich conversations Chloe has been listening to during these first days of her life. Debates about architectural philosophy, conversations about books, music, art and baby development. Of course, there are plenty of opportunities for sweet talking to Chloe also. She loves being read to and was especially engaged in <i>Runaway Bunny</i> by Margaret Wise Brown. All of this early exposure to the cadence and rhythm of language will help to develop her vocabulary and love of responding to and expressing language herself. She also by the way, loves listening to music, whether its her dad playing the guitar or the rich sounds of classical music. She is looking forward to her Aunt Emily's visit (AFS grad 2006) and listening to her playing violin. Her Uncle Eric (AFS grad 1998) and Aunt Diana will further her love for film and design. Seize the opportunity with all of your young babies and children to engage in play, lots of hugs, and to also expose them to rich language and discourse. Most of all, of course:enjoy this precious time.
